 My debut album, “One True Thing”, was a labor of love that took several years to complete. It started with pre-production on the songs in 2005 with drummer Rock Deadrick and bassist David Sutton. Deadrick was a favorite from Tracy Chapman’s band when she recorded and won the Grammy award for “New Beginning” and Sutton and Deadrick performed together with Chapman that year.The pre-production took quite a bit of time because it was important to put together the best songs and make them have the organic feel that would convey their meaning. It would take until March of 2009 before the commercial recording of “One True Thing” would start at Grammy award winning mixer Tom Weir’s Studio City Sound in Los Angeles. The pre-produced tracks were re-recorded and the other instruments and background vocals followed. Piano, Accordion, and Keyboards were the first thing added by Phil Parlapiano, who also played with Tracy Chapman but interestingly had played with John Prine and toured with Lowen and Navarro. He crafted a spacious sound and palate of sounds that supported the melodies of my music very artfully. Bruno Coon, a guitarist that works with Randy Newman on film scores played the nylon guitar on “Nothing In My Way”. Carina Round, a talented solo artist, was next and added her signature background vocals. Tim Pierce, a guitarist’s guitar player who recorded with Bruce Springsteen and Crowded House added his textured guitars and some solos to many of the songs to complement my acoustic and electric guitar work. The last thing Tom Weir and I did was bring in four 4th grade school girls to help sing the choruses on “Like A Child”, and a String Quartet Arranged and Conducted by The Eurhythmic’s, Pat Seymour. I’m working on my sophomore album now, and it’s a very different experience than the first time around. I’m making it possible for fans to see the recording process on my YouTube Channel. |
